Call: 07561 253604 Facebook Home About The Trust McTimoney Method John McTimoney McTimoney Method Chiropractic McTimoney in the UK Community Clinics Training Clinics Become a Chiropractor Students Connect Find a Chiropractor Donate John McTimoney John McTimoney 1915 - 1980 Born: Edgbaston, Birmingham Trained by: Pioneer English Chiropractor Dr Mary Walker Practice: Set up in 1951 Career: 30 years innovation of Chiropractic techniques Animals: 1954 pioneered animal Chiropractic techniques Teaching: 1972 founded School School: Full-time teaching at School from 1974 During the Depression, John McTimoney’s initial ambition to set up a jewellery-making business had to be put aside and he took on farm work. Whilst thatching a hayrick, he fell from the top of a ladder and as a consequence gradually began losing the use of both of his arms and had difficulty walking. By good fortune, his wife, Hilda, introduced him to Mr Ashford, a Chiropractor in Birmingham. Ashford had been trained by the originator of Chiropractic, D D Palmer in Davenport, USA. Over three years of treatments, John McTimoney regained his health and became fired with the ambition of becoming a Chiropractor himself. Development of McTimoney Method Chiropractic John McTimoney studied under Dr Mary Walker in Oxford. In around 1930, Dr Walker had sold up everything to go to America to train under the originator’s son, B J Palmer. John McTimoney was to develop the treatment further so that it became a distinctive approach and a separate branch of Chiropractic. With some Chiropractors using vigorous techniques in the 1970s, he felt it necessary to give the method a name, simply to help patients to realise that Chiropractors may work in different ways. A further innovation was the formulation of a Chiropractic analysis and treatment for animals in 1954. He is believed to be the first Chiropractor to do this. Establishing the McTimoney College of Chiropractic In 1972, already with 20 years’ experience in practice, he founded the Oxfordshire School of Chiropractic and took on a small group of pupils. From 1974 he devoted himself full time to the School and by the time of his death in 1980 most of the graduates were trained in the treatment of animals as well as people. Today, the College is one of only three in the UK offering recognised Chiropractic qualifications. The McTimoney way utilises broad diagnostic skills, recommends therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises and can provide dietary, nutritional and lifestyle advice. Vision Statement The principal activity of the Company, as stated in its Memorandum and Articles, is the advancement of education and training in the technique of McTimoney Chiropractic and support of clinics providing subsidised cost treatment for public benefit. Aims and objectives The advancement of education in the science/technique of the McTimoney Method of Chiropractic for humans and musculo-skeletal manipulation for animals through the provision of training and education for those seeking associated careers in health care. The intention to provide health checks and subsidised clinics for public benefit with a view to the promotion, preservation and protection of good health. To be a source of information for those interested in training to become a McTimoney Chiropractor. To be an information resource for people wishing to know more about McTimoney Chiropractic treatment for humans and animals. To provide support to students already training in the form of bursaries. Role of the Trust To further public access to McTimoney Method of Chiropractic To support research into the McTimoney Method of Chiropractic To advance the public profile of McTimoney Method of Chiropractic To provide information on all aspects of the McTimoney Method of Chiropractic To support students with the aid of bursaries To fundraise for future projects Report of the Chair, June 2017 - June 2019 The main aims for the McTimoney Trust for the past two years were; To further develop administrative and management support. To recruit new Board members. Engage with the McTimoney graduate community through McTimoney Connect. To organise a series of social and CPD opportunities to all graduates of McTimoney Chiropractic. Launch the McTimoney Trust Community Clinics programme. To work with local charities who will help support identify people on low incomes who could benefit from chiropractic. To encourage Community Clinics which meet the needs of animals owned by people on low incomes. To offer a Grants scheme to help groups of McTimoney Chiropractors set up Community Clinics. To establish a robust evaluation of the of McTimoney Chiropractic care. To secure a sound future for the McTimoney College of Chiropractic. To continue providing support to students of the McTimoney College of Chiropractic. To protect use of the McTimoney name and brand. To create a data base of McTimoney Chiropractic Graduates. I am very proud to report that all the above aims have been achieved. We welcomed Rosemary Jodko-Narkiewicz to the Board in December 2019. Imelda Twine returned as a Trustee after serving as Honorary Treasurer and advisor to the Board for a number of years and we welcomed Rachel Maher as a co-opted member earlier this year. Yvonne Bentley-Birch joined us in July 2019 as a Director of Operations. Pam Dixon, policy advisor and project manager for the Community Clinics scheme, worked tirelessly to bring to fruition the Community Clinics Scheme, putting in place robust processes and training for our volunteers In addition to this Pam set up a research based evaluation with Hallam, Sheffield University. Alongside the Community Clinics operated in collaboration between the Trust and other charities, the Trust has established a Grant Scheme to help groups of McTimoney Chiropractors set up local Community Clinics, this includes Clinics which meet the needs of animals owned by people on low incomes. McTimoney Connect continues to grow, engaging with the McTimoney graduate community through a series of events focused on low cost social and CPD opportunities. The Connect data base has over 1000 McTimoney graduates. Trustees have attended a number of meetings with BPP University throughout the past two years to secure a sound future for the McTimoney College of Chiropractic. Whilst MCC student recruitment on all McTimoney Chiropractic and Animal manipulation courses at Abingdon and Manchester has continued to be disappointing for many years, an encouraging increase occurred from September 2019. Support from the Trust for students of MCC continues; The Trust renewed the subscription to the Alternative Learning Guide, applications for the eighth tranche of awards were invited in September 2019 with awards being made in November 2019. In the past nine years the Trust has provided over £500,000 in financial support to the McTimoney College of Chiropractic and its students. The Trust has liaised with the Association for McTimoney Practitioners and met with the Registrar of the General Chiropractic Council regarding the use of the name McTimoney name and brand. In line with best practice recommendations and good Governance, the Trust has maintained and reviewed Policies and Procedures. Additional policies have been created in respect of volunteers. Board members undertook training in: Safe Guarding, Integrative Health Research, Current Trends in Chiropractic Research, Social media and working within the NHS.
