Strong, well co-ordinated muscles allow greater forces to go through the spine before injury occurs. After injury the body often uses compensatory movements which use incorrect muscles which do not support the spine effectively. This compensatory pattern becomes increasingly natural to the patient, the muscles being used become stronger and the muscles not being used become weaker. The muscle imbalance then leads to further problems in the spine. The aim of our Spinal Rehabilitation course is to ensure that the correct supporting muscles are not only strong but well co-ordinated to support and protect the spine efficiently. The rehabilitation program is what can make the difference between temporary improvements and long-term relief. In recent years there has been a great deal of research into exercise and spinal disorders. It was found that a reliable indicator for future low back pain was weak spinal muscles and that many patients experiencing long term spinal complaints benefit from intensive exercise programs of over 3 months duration. The right program for your needs Here at the Complete Chiropractic Centre we use an established and successful spinal rehabilitation programme, designed to retrain and re-balance the muscles that support the frame of the body. The Chiropractor will examine you to determine what spinal rehabilitation programme is suitable for your problem. You will then be referred to the rehabilitation gym where the mobility and strength of the neck/back is measured so that the correct level of exercise is given. Your measurements can then be compared with future assessments at 6 and 13 weeks. At each session you will be guided through your exercises by your instructor who will advise on the correct technique, posture and breathing. People usually seek a Chiropractor for pain caused by accident, injuries at work, poor posture or sports injuries, but it is not only back pain and leg pain that are eased with Chiropractic care. It is safe, effective treatment for many muscle, joint and nerve problems in people of all ages. The central nervous system is the body’s control system which co-ordinates most functions in the body. The spinal cord and the nerve roots that exist around each spinal bone can easily be damaged by stress or trauma. Improper motion of vertebrae can cause nerve irritation this is why Chiropractors work primarily with the spine, to remove interference that may be causing pain or impairing normal health and activities. What happens at an appointment? An initial visit will take up to 45 minutes. A case history and a full neurological and orthopaedic examination will be undertaken in order to evaluate the patient’s condition. New digital high frequency x-ray facilities are available if indicated, allowing further insight with minimal x-ray dosage. The Chiropractor then carries out a detailed analysis of the bones, joints and muscles, to identify the problem. Before treatment is started a detailed report of findings is given allowing the patient to gain a full understanding of their problem and how it is to be addressed. Treatment consists of gently unlocking the stiff joints with manipulation by hand. The adjustments help return the joint to normal function, create reflexes that reduce muscle spasm and help to relieve pain and ill health. The Chiropractor may recommend additional procedures or suggest other ways to enhance the healing process. Dr Stephen Masters: Doctor of Chiropractic Stephen Masters is a Doctor of Chiropractic BSc (Chiro) MCC (Orthopaedics) P.G. DIP (Clinical Chiropractic). Stephen, a born and bred Devonian, has been practising in Barnstaple since 1992. He qualified at the Anglo-European College of Chiropractic after a 4 year full time course. He is registered with the General Chiropractic Council, a member of the British Chiropractic Association and a specialist member of the College of Chiropractors. Stephen’s Post Graduate Diploma is in the area of rehabilitation of chronic or recurrent spinal complaints, combining manipulation of the spine with specific exercise to regain strength, often lost by prolonged inactivity as a result of pain, or by compensating for painful movements.
