North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust and South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have formally agreed to form a group to enable closer working across the two organisations. This exciting development has come about following years of joint working but is now well underway following the recruitment of the group’s chief executive, Stacey Hunter. The group model means that the two organisations remain separate so they can represent their communities really effectively, but it has the flexibility to enable the trusts to work at scale to take strategic decisions which benefit the group as a whole and the patients we serve. This is not a merger. Both trusts remain as separate organisations – keeping their own existing identities and names – but going forward, when they are working together, they can now collectively be known as University Hospitals Tees. The two trusts are the area’s largest employers, with a budget of around £1.2billion and more than 15,000 staff who deliver acute, tertiary and community health and care services across the Tees Valley, North Yorkshire, County Durham and beyond. University Hospitals Tees will deliver better outcomes for: Patients – by ensuring equal access to treatment and sharing best practice on how to deliver care. Staff – by enabling them to work on all of the group’s sites more easily and develop career opportunities. The wider population – by collaborating to work on endemic health issues and having a coherent voice to represent the people of the Tees Valley and parts of County Durham and North Yorkshire. This is complex programme of change which will involve working with a wide variety of partners. These include: local authorities, Healthwatch, patient involvement leads, other NHS trusts, primary care organisations and third sector organisations, as well as influencing regionally through the Integrated Care System for North East and North Cumbria. The two Teesside-based trusts announced their group ambitions in January 2023, after securing the permanent appointment of a joint chair, Professor Derek Bell OBE, in September 2021. The formal partnership agreement was signed in February 2024. It is hoped that by working together the two trusts will be better placed to bid for national funding for the area and better able to retain and attract specialist doctors and nurses in hard-to-recruit areas. Dr Neil O’Brien, chief medical officer, NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB) said: “The new flu strain this year can cause serious illness, which could be fatal for some older, more vulnerable, people and those who have long-term health conditions. “Our hospital wards are already seeing more patients with flu than usual, for November, and this could be just the beginning. "Children are catching and spreading flu at alarmingly high rates which means the virus is likely to keep spreading through families and into older age groups in the weeks ahead. The flu vaccine is our best defence and will stop many people from becoming seriously ill this winter. If you’re eligible, and have not yet had your vaccine, it is vital that you get protected now.” Be wise, immunise The flu vaccine is free for more than 1.7 million people, across the North East and North Cumbria, including: Everyone aged 65 and over Pregnant women Children aged 2 to 3 years old Primary and secondary schoolchildren up to Year 11 Anyone with a long-term health condition such as asthma or diabetes. It’s also available to carers, and health and care workers. More than 950 vaccination sites are available in GP practices, community pharmacies, and local hospitals. Vaccinations for adults can be booked online at www.nhs.uk, on the NHS App or by calling 119 free of charge. Who we are The children and young people’s hub at the Friarage Hospital is made up of three different clinical areas: Children and young people’s ward Children and young people’s outpatient department Community children and young people’s nursing team (base for Hambleton and Richmondshire) Some of the families who access our services live in remote areas of the Yorkshire Dales. Our vision is to provide high quality, safe care, closer to home. Our aim is to provide family-centred care. The ethos of care we deliver is driven by the voice of children and young people. What we do Children and young people’s ward The children and young people’s ward is open Monday to Friday 9am until 6pm. The ward takes referrals from GPs for children who need a clinical assessment from a specialist consultant (paediatrician) and admits children for day surgery and a range of medical procedures and assessments. Outpatient department The children and young people’s outpatient department holds a number of clinics for a variety of clinical services. This allows the children and their families to gain access to specialist care closer to their homes. Community nursing team The children and young people’s community nurses offer care within children’s homes, schools and respite care facilities. The children and young people who are seen often have complex clinical needs and are cared for by the team until they transition from the service at 19 years old. Equality and diversity is an important aspect of respect in caring for our patients and working with others as part of our role in ensuring the delivery of a high standard of care to patients. The NHS Constitution pledges employees will be treated fairly, equally and free from discrimination. It also outlines that staff have a duty not to discriminate against patients or staff and to adhere to equal opportunities and equality and human rights legislation. The Equality Act 2010 The Equality Act 2010 legally protects people from discrimination in the workplace and in wider society. It replaced previous anti-discrimination laws with a single Act, making the law easier to understand and strengthening protection in some situations. It sets out the different ways in which it’s unlawful to treat someone. The Public Sector Equality Duty came into force across Great Britain on 5 April 2011. It means that public bodies have to consider all individuals when carrying out their day-to-day work – in shaping policy, in delivering services and in relation to their own employees. It also requires that public bodies have due regard to the need to: Eliminate discrimination Advance equality of opportunity Foster good relations between different people when carrying out their activities The purpose of the specific duties regulations 2011 is to ensure that all public bodies play their part in making society fairer by tackling discrimination and providing equality of opportunity for all. The two specific duties introduced by the Specific Duties Regulations 2011 mean that NHS organisations are required to Publish information to demonstrate compliance at least annually starting from 31 January 2012. They must include information relating to persons who share a relevant protected characteristic who are its employees and other persons affected by its policies and practices. The information published must include information relating to employees who share characteristics and also information relating to people who are affected by the public body’s policies and procedures who share protected characteristics for example service users. Prepare and publish equality objectives at least every four years starting from 6 April 2012. Objective 2 – Increase trust’s engagement with patients and the public from all protected characteristics. Objective 3 – Improve the experience of older people using our services. Objective 4 – Mandatory equality and diversity training for all staff. Objective 5 – Discrimination, bullying and harassment of staff. Progress against these objectives is reviewed by the trust’s Equality and Diversity Working Group (Fairness Forum). Further work around equality objectives is planned for 2018 using the EDS2 (Equality Delivery System 2).
