The session was part of the Active Tees programme which has been funded by National Lottery funding by Sport England in partnership with Canal and River Trust and is exploring physical activity opportunities for individuals who have lived experience of cancer. The project is gaining valuable insight from individuals and health professionals with the long-term aim of developing a comprehensive and varied programme of physical activity opportunities based at Tees Barrage utilising the River Tees and the surrounding environment. Alan Chandler, Macmillan Information and Survivorship Manager – North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust said “Myself, four colleagues and seven patients spent over an hour bell boating along the Tees. From start to finish everything was well organised and I have nothing but praise for the staff. They were knowledgeable about the wildlife and the surrounding area and made the whole experience fantastic. Speaking to both NHS staff and patients everyone thought the whole experience was brilliant and would highly recommend it. One of the patients celebrated his birthday and said having the whole group sing happy birthday made for an absolutely memorable birthday. Seeing the patients keeping active and enjoying the local outdoors was fantastic. Patients and staff all commented on how this was fantastic for both their physical and mental wellbeing. The patients finished the day with a hot drink and a chat about their great experience. Thanks to the Active Tees and Tees Active for making this possible and highlighting the natural assets that are accessible to our patients which enables them to improve both their physical and mental wellbeing.” Chris Gibbens, Tees Barrage International White-Water Centre Manger said “Active Tees is all about system change and developing new partnerships and ways of working. The River Trip and the conversations and energy around developing a physical activity programme for individuals with a lived experience of cancer is a great example of how Active Tees has enabled new partnerships to form and insight led projects are being developed for the benefit of the community.” One of the lived experience patients summed up the day and outcomes that Active Tees are hoping to achieve by stating that “The afternoon Belboating made for the best day I have had in a couple of years. The time on the river was just right for us and to have happy birthday sung to me on the water made for an unforgettable memory. Adding a stop in the steam room to your post workout routine can improve your recovery time and help you feel healthier. There are also many other health benefits from regular sauna and steam use including: improved circulation, lower blood pressure, reduced stress, boosted immune system, healthy skin and they even burn calories. Please read the FAQs below before attending a sauna & steam session. Before I visit, what do I need to know? Before you visit please be aware of what we expect from you in our full guidelines here. How long is a sauna & steam session? All sauna & steam sessions are 1.5 hours long. You can book onto a session at any time if there are spaces available and do not have to stay for the entire duration of the session. Each session will be allocated a wristband and you will receive this on check in at reception. Recommended guidance is that you should spend 20/30 in the sauna room and then take a cold shower before heading into the steam room. With the steam room, it’s recommended to spend 6mins/12mins before having another cold shower, then repeat once more. You can use the steam room first, but you should not exceed the recommended duration in either room. Who can attend a sauna & steam session? Anyone aged 16+ can attend our sauna & steam sessions. All spaces must be booked either in advance using our online booking platform or with the venue’s reception. Please be aware that whilst sauna & steam sessions at IB Leisure are mixed, sessions at Billingham Forum are single sex only. How do I book for a sauna & steam session? As spaces are limited all sessions must be booked prior to entering the suites. Sessions can be booked online here or with our venue reception teams. If you haven’t created an account with us already and aren’t a member of Activ8 or Tees Active, you can create a new member account easily. All you need is an email address. If you haven’t created an account with us already but are a member, then please create an existing member account using the membership number from your card or band. I'm an Activ8 member, do I need to pay for sauna & steam? No, sauna & steam is included within your Activ8 membership. When are sauna & steam sessions running? Please check our online booking timetable here for sauna & steam session times. How many spaces are there per session? There are 12 spaces available in each sauna & steam session at IB Leisure and 9 spaces at Billingham Forum. You can book a session at any time if there are spaces available and do not have to stay for the entire duration of the session. What should I wear? Swimwear must be worn at all times in the sauna and steam suite. Please make sure you read our full guidelines on what to wear and etiquette in the sauna here. Sauna & Steam Timetable PLEASE ENSURE YOU CHECK IN FOR ALL YOUR BOOKED SESSIONS AT RECEPTION OR AT A CHECK IN POINT. Members who fail to attend, fail to cancel at least 120 minutes before their session or don’t check in for their sessions will have their account frozen with a 50p charge applied.
