These may vary depending on your child’s specific needs. Prior to any intervention, aims and objectives will be set alongside caregivers to ensure we are working on realistic goals for your child. These are then reviewed regularly to determine progress made. We offer a range of affordable treatments: Weekly intervention at our Newton Aycliffe or Stockton clinics. One off consultations with home programme (popular with teenage youngsters) School based interventions including sensory routines or motor skills programmes. Therapeutic Listening Programme Specialised handwriting programme (handwriting without tears or perceptual motor programme). Sensory workshops. Feeding therapy (SOS Approach to feeding). Sensory Attachment Therapy (SAI) Treatment can therefore focus on a specific area such as handwriting, or address a number of issues, depending on the child’s needs. This can be further discussed with our staff. Children benefit enormously from our programmes. Activities are fun and easy to implement within the home environment. Treatment not only develops the child’s core movement skills, but also helps with their regulation, attention, behaviour and general functioning. We use standardised assessments and clinical observations to identify the child’s area of strength, difficulties and how these are affecting both their home life and academic performance. We ensure that assessments are adapted accordingly based on the child’s age and ability. The different assessment packages can be discussed with a Paediatric Occupational Therapist, to select the most appropriate for the child’s needs. An assessment at Tree Tops may be beneficial if your child has some difficulty in any of the following areas: Motor skills. Handwriting. Independence skills. Sensory sensitivities and aversions. Attention and concentration. Regulation challenges including hyperactivity, emotional outbursts and behavioural challenges. Poor sleeping pattern. Limited diet or feeding difficulties. We have developed a Symptom Checklist which outlines a number of behaviours or difficulties a child may be displaying. It therefore helps as a checklist to determine whether a child would benefit from an assessment. Having completed this you can call to discuss your concerns and arrange an assessment. Download Symptom Checklist Children can be referred by parents, schools or other organisations for an assessment and costings. Please Contact Us to further discuss all of the options. Get In Touch! Our dynamic team works together to create a warm, friendly atmosphere here at Tree Tops. All staff holds a current DBS certificate and therapists are registered with the Royal College of Occupational Therapy and HCPC registered. Why are we called Tree Tops? Tree Tops is called this because it relates to a child development being similar to that of a tree. In order for a child to flourish, they require really strong and solid roots which will support and equip them to branch out to establish such vital skills as: Fine and gross motor skills * Emotional stability * Learning and good attention * Social skills * Independence skills These areas are represented by the numerous leaves seen on the tree branches and also on our Reception walls. FizzwigAycliffe Company Mascot Hi, I’m Fizzwig, the company mascot since 2014. I was donated to Tree Tops by Parkside Academy (Willington). A competition was duly held to choose my name, which was won by James and Andrew. I love it as it is so different! Maria also designed my tee shirt, my uniform, which makes me look so smart! I live in the waiting room and I enjoy being cuddled by the children. At times I am involved in the sessions and take part in various activities on the swings, bench, space hopper, trampoline and handwriting tasks. I enjoy wrestling, helping others in distress and compiling competitions for the children to take part in every term. I have a Friday slot on the Tree Tops Facebook page where parents/carers/professionals can ask me questions about our services. I’m also trying to trend on Twitter, so get tweeting for #AskFizzwig! My ambition? To be famous! Baby FizzieStockton Company Mascot Hello, I’m Baby Fizzie! I was given to Tree Tops by Mr and Mrs Bishop in 2019 who wanted someone to care for me and also give me the home I deserve. So, here I am! I live at our Stockton Clinic on Durham Road, Stockton, and make myself known to all the Tree Toppers that come here for some fun! I take part in the sensory integration sessions and ADORE the food therapy sessions which involve....food!! I enjoy doing lots of oral motor activities with the children which improves my speech and eating skills. We have a beautiful window at our Stockton Clinic so I like to sit and look out of it, waving at the people who go by every day. As you can see, I also have my own uniform tee shirt and think I look as smart as a carrot. It would be lovely to receive some letters from our Followers as I am an avid reader and love corresponding, practicing my handwriting skills. Get writing! Tree Tops has an outstanding reputation due to the hard work and commitment of her dedicated team. Dawn’s passion to educate others about SPD has resulted in a range of training courses for professionals and parents. Dawn is also extremely proud to be a Patron of Sensory Processing Disorder Parent Support Group North East England which is closely affiliated with Tree Tops. Dawn enjoys keeping fit by doing lots of running! Katie LazenbyLead Office Administrator Katie joined Tree Tops in February 2024. She has had many administrative roles throughout the years. Her husband’s career allowed them to move around the UK and they lived in Germany for a couple of years which she said was an adventure! She enjoyed travelling, living in different locations, and meeting other people. Katie has two grown up children and recently became a Grandma! She loves spending time with her family as they do lots of things together. Travelling both in the UK and abroad is what she loves to do. Her ‘go to’ place for total relaxation is the Isle of Mull; stunning scenery, very peaceful and the wildlife is amazing! She also enjoys long walks in the countryside, especially the Lake District, eating out, the local pub quiz, going to the theatre, music concerts and rugby (obviously watching it, not playing!) Katie said she has been made very welcome here at Tree Tops. The staff and the children that she meets daily are lovely. It is such a happy and rewarding place to work. Big WizzStockton Company Lead Mascot Hi, I'm Big Wizz and I joined the Tree Tops team late 2024. I’m also Fizzwig's big cousin and have travelled all the way from the beautiful sandy beaches of the Caribbean where I have a holiday home, to visit him at Tree Tops. I enjoy the beautiful ocean and go diving regularly. He told me that he was really busy and he needed some help - so I’ve decided to stay. I have been seconded to our Stockton Clinic to keep a watchful eye on Baby Fizzie as he is just little therefore needs looking after. I love to play, bounce, swing and wrestle and I hope I can help you in your sessions here at Stockton. Tree Tops Teddy Bear ClanSensory Integration Buddies We are the Tree Tops teddies and love being with the children. We are very cuddly and friendly. We enjoy going on adventures, meeting your family and friends and of course, visiting new places or going on holiday with you! We love going home with you and enjoy doing the home programme you receive from our OT's at Tree Tops. At bedtime, we too like to have a story and a big hug before going to sleep. Please remember to take us back to Tree Tops so we are ready for our next adventure. We would love you to draw or write about our adventures though so everyone knows what we have been up to! Keep an eye out on our Instagram posts for our "Where's the Tree Tops Teddy Bear" - we like to keep you all guessing where we are. Dawn O'HanlonPractice Manager Dawn (known as Dawny-o) has been working for Tree Tops since 2002 - virtually from the beginning! She left school at 16 and attended Bishop Auckland College gaining her Secretarial Certificates (her keyboard at Tree Tops is bare as the letters have all disappeared). She previously worked for a large multi-national company for 16 years. She says, "Tree Tops is one big happy family and for that reason, would not want to work anywhere else." The improvements she sees in the children are phenomenal. Dawny-o is the mainstream/special school contact and also puts together our social media platforms. She is actively involved with our parent support group; Sensory Processing Disorder Parent Support Group NE England. At home, Dawny-o is married with two adult children. She has tropical fish, geckos, and a cockapoo called, Monty who she says is virtually human! Dawny-o enjoys ballet, gardening, eating out, reading, dancing, and more importantly, golf! She is an avid NUFC supporter. Candice BurtonAssistant Administrator Candice joined Tree Tops in September 2024. Candice relocated from America to the North East of England in October 2019. She holds a degree in Communication and has had a varied career over the years, most recently working in workplace education and training. Candice is married and has two lovely children, a boy and a girl. In her spare time, she loves to spend time with her family and take her children to fun activities and days out. Candice is very passionate about working with children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, and volunteers much of her time with the community. She is a Trustee for a local SEND charity, and she has recently been named as the SEND Coordinator for her church, where she runs a weekly playgroup for SEND children and has advised on the fit out of their brand-new sensory room. She also runs a Facebook group to help families find accessible events, activities and days out across the North East of England. Candice first came to know Tree Tops when her son came for an assessment and sensory integration treatment three years ago. She says she feels very fortunate to be working for a company that has made such a positive impact on her son’s life, and that she is looking forward to being able to contribute towards doing the same for other children and their families. Laura WatsonClinical Lead Occupational Therapist Sensory Integration Practitioner Laura joined the Tree Tops team in 2015 after qualifying as an occupational therapist at Northumbria University. She has always enjoyed working with children - particularly in her role during work experience and placement settings, so Tree Tops was a great opportunity to work in Paediatrics. Currently Laura's time is divided between working within our two clinics and local schools. She works mainly within specialist education schools, helping children with additional and complex needs. Her favourite thing about working at Tree Tops is that no two days are the same, as no two children are the same! She enjoys working alongside families to support their children at home, as well as working with school staff to support pupils within the classroom. Over the past six years, Laura has completed various additional learning, including a Baby Sensory course in 2018. She has also gone on to complete Modules 1, 2 and 3 in Sensory Integration (SI), qualifying as an SI Practitioner in 2020, conducted via Sheffield Hallam University. Laura hopes to go on to do further studies with the possibility of achieving a Masters Degree in SI. When Laura is not at Tree Tops, she enjoys running and keeping fit as well as indulging in delicious food! However, her favourite thing of all is seeking sunshine through trips and holidays....as most of the Tree Tops team will tell you!! Welcome back Laura from maternity leave! It is great to have you back. Jill SealeyConsultant Paediatric Occupational Therapist Jill trained at the London School of Occupational Therapy (way back when!) and it was here, whilst on her final clinical placement at a large residential learning disabilities facility, that her future career was mapped out for her – she had found her place and her passion in the occupational therapy world. She gained her SI training from Liverpool University. The travel bug then hit several years later and Jill’s family moved abroad to work. During this time, Jill advanced her occupational therapy knowledge by working in Community based practice and expanded her leadership skills by completing her Master’s Degree in Executive Management with Durham University. Returning back to the UK, Jill decided to have a career break – but that did not materialise as much to her surprise and delight, Tree Tops found out she was back in the country! Jill has now been part of our team for many years, working part time (her choice, not ours). She specialises in working with children and young adults with learning difficulties, including individuals on the autistic spectrum and those with profound and complex needs. She derives a huge amount of personal job satisfaction from her post here at Tree Tops and literally thrives on working alongside other dedicated and experienced health and educational professionals. Outside of the occupational therapy world, Jill loves to travel and explore, hiking, eating out, practice yoga and enjoy life to the full. Who wouldn’t! Samuel CarterSenior Occupational Therapist Samuel (known as Sam) joined our team early September 2023 after qualifying as an occupational therapist at Northumbria University. Sam gets great enjoyment from working with children and finds it incredibly rewarding when a child makes personal progress. He has an Undergraduate Degree in Primary Education and experience of working as a class teacher in two mainstream primary schools in the North East. Sam's desire to see children flourish in all areas of their lives, including beyond the classroom, is what led him to pursue occupational therapy. While completing his Masters Degree, Sam worked on a men's rehabilitation ward at an acute mental health hospital, supporting patients with their recovery back into the community. Sam combines his experiences from teaching, knowledge of Sensory Integration (SI) and skills as an occupational therapist in his work here at Tree Tops. Sam is SI Level 1 trained from Sheffield Hallam University. When Sam is not at Tree Tops, he enjoys running, swimming, reading, drawing and going to the cinema. He also likes taking his dogs for walks on the beach in Northumberland. Felicity KyteSenior Occupational Therapist Felicity joined our team in January 2020. She has always worked with children. Felicity spent ten years working as a Teaching Assistant in a primary school, which is where she first heard about Tree Tops. On completing the ‘Think Sensory Not Behaviour’ course, this really helped her understanding of the children and how the sensory systems can affect their everyday life. Felicity left the childcare sector for a couple of years to run her own upcycling business but really missed working with children so when she saw the position advertised at Tree Tops, she did not hesitate to apply, and here she is now! A great dab hand at DIY too! Felicity works at both clinics and our partnership schools, supporting all the children who attend. She says it is great to work with so many different children and it is helping her learn lots of new ways to provide support. Felicity is SI Level 1 trained from Sheffield Hallam University. When Felicity is not at work, she loves to relax by going on long walks in the countryside with her dog and trying new creative activities. When she is not outdoors, you can find her snuggled up with a good book and a cuppa or trying new recipes in the kitchen. (Definitely a good person to have around)! I cannot wait to meet you all and have some fun in the sessions. Holly SmithOccupational Therapist Holly joined our team at Tree Tops in early September 2024 after qualifying as an occupational therapist from York St John University. Whilst at university, Holly moved to Guernsey for three months to live by herself in a cottage on the beach and learn more about occupational therapy. In Guernsey, she got the opportunity to learn about sensory integration therapy with children and adults with learning difficulties (as well as eating her fair share of Guernsey Gâche!). Holly has known she wanted to work with children since she was little and would pretend to teach her class of teddy bears! When she discovered occupational therapy at sixteen, she instantly felt she had found her future career – and here she is at Tree Tops! Holly is still young at heart and, when she is not at Tree Tops, she can be found watching films, playing board games with her family, and shopping. Holly also loves to curl up with a book on a rainy day and owns over one hundred and fifty books. It is her goal to one day have a library of her very own. Well, we think she is well on the way to reaching that goal don't you! Ellen Ramsay-WatsonSenior Paediatric Occupational Therapist Advanced Sensory Integration Practitioner Ellen joined Tree Tops in August 2017 after graduating from Teesside University. She has Level 1, 2 and 3 Sensory Integration (SI) and qualified as a SI Practitioner in 2024. Ellen is now an Advanced Sensory Integration Practitioner after qualifying with Sheffield Hallam University in October 2025. She is trained in the Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) Approach to Feeding i.e., fussy/picky eaters and is certified to administer the Child Attachment and Play Assessment, Story Stem Procedure (CAPA). She first got into occupational therapy after seeing occupational therapists in action from visiting places such as the children’s cancer ward, working as a health care assistant in a secure mental health unit, nursing home, day centre and care farms. She has become very passionate about empowering others through creative outlets. As everyone will tell you, Ellen is into all things outdoorsy and being creative…. she loves getting stuck in!… and she certainly gets to do that here at Tree Tops! She enjoys walking her dog, Fern, at the beach and loves yoga, paddle boarding and gardening. Ellen will always say that children and their families are at the heart of what we do here. She works in both our clinics as well as within special/mainstream/SEMH schools and nurseries, using her expertise in food therapy and Infant SI training. Ellen is now on maternity leave and enjoying lots of baby cuddles with our new honorary Tree Topper. See you soon, Ellen! Alison GibsonSenior Occupational Therapist Alison (known as Ali), trained to be an occupational therapist, after being introduced to the role when working with children who displayed ASD and complex needs and becoming passionate about sensory integration. Ali qualified in 2020. Prior to retraining, Ali worked for many years in education; mainstream, primary and specialist educational settings. Ali joined the Tree Tops team in 2021 and enjoys working with all our children, families and schools. Ali has gained her SI Level 1 and Level 2 via Sheffield Hallam University. Outside of work, Ali enjoys walking her dogs, going out for coffee, visiting her family and reading. Her most favourite new job though is being a grandma! Kate GarringtonOccupational Therapist Kate joined the Tree Tops team in January 2024. She worked for several years as a HR advisor in the manufacturing industry, before embarking on a new career in occupational therapy after having her two children. Once qualified, Kate initially worked part-time for the NHS as an occupational therapist in a rotational post, whilst also volunteering in a school. Working at Tree Tops has given Kate the opportunity to fulfil her ambition of working with children in a creative role and she loves meeting the children, discovering their different personalities. She finds it very rewarding to see the impact that occupational therapy can have to many aspects of their lives. Kate is SI Level 1 trained from Sheffield Hallam University. Kate has two sons, and recently gave birth to her little girl! She two cats and in her spare time enjoys seeing her friends, keeping active and making lots of memories with her boys and newborn baby girl. The team wish Kate, her husband and family all the very best on the birth of Florence. Barbara ScottOccupational Therapist Barbara joined the Tree Tops team in January 2024 as a newly qualified occupational therapist from Teesside University. Barbara has always been interested in working with children, but her life took her in different directions first. She has a background in training and international development and had worked in the charity and voluntary sector for over twenty years before joining the team. Barbara’s favourite thing about working at Tree Tops is getting to know the children, discovering their amazing personalities, and seeing them grow in confidence week by week. Barbara is SI Level 1 trained from Sheffield Hallam University. When not at work, Barbara can be found in the garden looking after her hens, or out on adventures in the countryside with her two girls and border Border Collie Max. Josephine ReynoldsOccupational Therapist Josephine (known as Josie) joined the Tree Tops team in September 2024 as a newly qualified occupational therapist from Sunderland University. Josie has always been interested in working with children. Whilst at College, Josie spent time volunteering in a local Secondary School, working on their skills and looking at their wellbeing. Josie gained experience working with adults with SEND difficulties on placement and thoroughly enjoyed it. Josie’s favourite thing about working at Tree Tops is meeting the children, discovering their fabulous personalities and helping them to make personal progress, finding it an extremely rewarding process. When Josie is not at Tree Tops, she loves to relax spending time with her family and friends, exploring new places and watching her football team! Here's hoping her football team reach great heights just like her! Heidi ReedOccupational Therapy Assistant Heidi joined the Tree Tops team in Summer 2024. Before that, Heidi worked for ten years as a Teaching Assistant supporting SEN children in mainstream education. It was whilst delivering occupational therapy and physiotherapy sessions to children in school that Heidi became interested in occupational therapy, jumping at the chance to take on a new career at Tree Tops. Heidi loves working at Tree Tops, and she thoroughly enjoys meeting all the children and getting to know their unique personalities. In her spare time, Heidi likes to keep active doing Pilates and yoga classes and going on long walks with her Schnauzer Alfie. She has two sons, Sam and Jack, who are football mad so consequently her weekends are spent supporting them from the sidelines! Maria TribleyAssistant Administrator Maria Joined the admin team at Tree Tops in May 2025. Maria has experience of working in the Education and Health Care sectors. As well as having admin experience in both sectors, Maria also has a teaching qualification in Post Compulsory Education and Training, as well as CACHE Level 2 and 3, Teaching Assistant and City and Guilds Level 3, A1 Assessor Certificates. Maria’s early career as a hairdresser presented her with the opportunity to travel, working as a Hairdresser and Hair and Beauty Salon Manager on board Cruise Ships. She then worked abroad for many more years, during which time she met her husband and started a family. Maria relocated back to the UK with her family when her children were school age and volunteered as a parent helper at their school, which then led her to train as a Teaching Assistant. Her teaching assistant skills helped her gain employment as a Tutor at Bishop Auckland College where she began teaching secondary age children who attended college one day a week while in Years 10 and 11. After ten years in that role, Maria changed careers to work in admin in the healthcare field. During the warmer weather, Maria likes to go kayaking and paddle boarding in the Lake District and tries to keep fit by participating in Pilates and walking. Jane MorganOccupational Therapy Assistant Jane joined the Tree Tops team May 2022. Jane attended New College Durham after leaving school and trained to be a hairdresser and beautician. She then worked in numerous salons and continued with further training in beauty therapy before having a career break to have children. When her children started school, Jane then volunteered to support the children as a parent helper which led her to begin training to be a Teaching Assistant. Whilst training, Jane worked in a private day nursery. In 2006, Jane began working in a mainstream primary school as a Teaching Assistant. To begin with she worked 1:1 with numerous children on the autism spectrum and learning difficulties and then as a general classroom Teaching Assistant. Jane says she loved her time in school but missed working 1:1 with the children. Jane says she is thrilled to be working with the Tree Tops team and has followed our work for a while. She is excited to meet the children and their families. She hopes to use all the skills learnt in school and transfer them to working at Tree Tops. Jane lives on an airfield and is married to a farmer. They have two grown up children, Robbie and Naomi and a Labrador called Arya. She loves eating out and socialising with friends, in between day to day running of the charity and organising charity events. She also loves a good book and takes her Kindle everywhere. Children can be referred for sensory integration therapy and specialist interventions within our clinic, where we endeavour to build strong therapeutic relationships. As part of this service, we work closely with caregivers and school to support the child in a holistic way.
