If so, you are not alone. The good news is that HMRC now allows counselling or therapy to be treated as a business expense in certain cases.How can you claim therapy as a business cost?If you trade through a limited company and you are on the payroll, then there is potential. HMRC now recognises that ‘welfare counselling’ provided to employees can be an allowable business expense and not a taxable benefit.If your business pays for counselling to support employee wellbeing, you will not get penalised with extra tax as long as it is available to all employees, not just the directors. However, there are a few caveats:Sole traders cannot claim therapy as a business expense.Company directors must be on the payroll to qualify.The benefit must be available to all employees, not just you.So, if you are a limited company director and yourself via PAYE, you can include therapy under this exemption. However, if you are self-employed or a director not on payroll, HMRC still views therapy as a personal cost.What types of counselling qualify?HMRC provides a list of acceptable reasons where counselling and therapy can qualify, including sessions relating to:Stress or workplace problemsDebt and financial difficultiesAlcohol or drug dependencyCareer concernsBereavementIll-healthHarassment or bullyingRelationship problemsHowever, not everything qualifies.
