Pete explained the concept of a Black Elephant to describe Grenfell. The black elephant was eloquently articulated in Gill Kernick’s book, Catastrophe and Systemic Change. Whilst a Black Swan event is a high impact event that could not have been predicted, an unknown unknown, Grenfell was a known unknown: we knew it would happen. Grenfell was a black elephant. It is refreshing to see someone as senior as Andrew Bulmer post about the reality of where construction and the built environment is currently at with building safety. The answer is, in a mess. However, what is missing from Andrew’s post is an investigation into what the industry can do about it, beyond the vague concept of “culture change”. Culture change is such a compelling concept to senior leaders because it wraps up blame, guilt and shame into a simple package that they can use to articulate the industry responsibility without producing any actionable metrics. Dame Judith Hackitt has been using it for eight years without effect – because it is ineffective. It doesn’t help; it simply pushes the problem around. How do we fix it? In order to move beyond the vague concept of culture change and learn how to change the building safety crisis we have to lose our obsession with blame and blame avoidance. Gill Kernick, who is very experienced in dealing with the fallout of Black Swan events in other industries, talks about blame a lot in her book. We must stop blaming the firefighters, the manufacturers, the designers, the asset operators, the architects. Can you feel yourself wanting to? Me too. But it must stop now. I believe that the answer instead of culture change and blame is to listen to the voices of people that are on the ground and know what the problems are. We need to listen to the uncomfortable truths from troublemakers, the ones who are often sidelined or ridiculed. Some examples from Grenfell: Eddie Dafarn, Gill Kernick and Emma Dent Coad. Some examples from the Post Office Scandal: Alan Bates, Richard Roll and James Arbuthnot. No one has the full picture of the problem, but they all have a part of it. We need to hear what they have to say, and act on it. We need to look for the people who are helping and learn from them. This is why I invited Neil Yeomans CEnvH MCIEH and Matt Hodges-Long to have a public conversation with me at Digital Construction Week this year. To me they are two valuable examples of helpers/troublemakers looking at the challenges faces by building owners and operators. They know what is wrong and how to fix it and they are not often given the ear of ministers and the media. I used the black elephant as an illustration of the problem and asked them what we should actually be doing to fix the mess we are in. What Neil and Matt had to say: The Problem During our conversation we looked at three examples of problems: BIM and handover The software chasm between BIM in construction and asset management in housing. The nature of the asset owner operator community and their experience and understanding of the buildings they are looking after. A lack of common standards and the inadequacy of COBie to cover all the information asset owners need. The difference between ‘as built’ and ‘as occupied’ when so many changes happen in the occupation phase. The EWS1 Scandal How introducing a certification scheme without a central registry, proper governance or version control was an obvious magnet for fraud. How we still don’t know the size of the problem, but a refusal to accept the mistake means that thousands of homeowners have become stranded and unable to buy or sell their property, and they have no idea whether it is safe or not. Implementing the Golden Thread How the regulator is implementing the golden thread regime without creating a ‘single source of truth’. People providing information cannot link to it, they have to upload a copy, answer questions on a spreadsheet, and then do it again for the fire service. How this is creating costly duplication of work and preventing the efficient management of information right across the sector. Rather than demonstrating safety and efficiency we are simple compounding error and increasing risk. What should happen now? I asked Neil and Matt what one thing they would urge industry, regulator and government to do. Neil said that the key is to adopt the UK Housing Data Standards and soft landings. Matt said that they key is to value the data you are governing. I urged industry to learn the basics of information management and become more transparent in your communications. We have spent eight years thrashing about and not fixing the problem. Indeed it looks like we are making it worse. Let’s take some actionable steps. Lets start listening to the ‘troublemakers’. Recent clients include The British Property Federation, New London Architecture, AEC Hackathon, RIBA, RSAW, CIMCIG, CIOB, the Association of Interior Specialists, The Council for Aluminium in Building, Kalzip, Gunnebo, Tobermore Concrete Products, ICE Essex and The Foundation Works. My approach to events is to give a tailored, relevant presentation that entertains the audience, teaches them something they don’t know and has them wanting to do something about it right away after the event is over. I’ve recently spoken to audiences of product manufacturers, marketing managers, specialist subcontractors and architects and engineers, and property professionals, as well as mixed audiences. Common topics of my recent talks include: Talking to Architects – An Alternative Strategy to the Push The Social Networks and the Future of Construction Collaborative Working in Construction – Why we Don’t Do it How to Harness LinkedIn to generate New Business Social Media – Where are we Now? How to be Safe and Sensible Online Marketing your Architecture Practice in the 21st Century You can see examples of past speaking engagements and blog posts about recent events and talks. I’ve also been making videos about construction, collaboration, social media and BIM with The B1M. Want to talk to me about speaking at your event? Please get in touch with as much notice as possible and we’ll have a preliminary chat. Testimonials for Su Butcher Gunnebo invited Su to address an international audience during a product launch which we held in Paris in November 2013. The presentation addressed the interaction with architects and the use of social media. I have been given a number of talks on social media but Su beat them all. It was by far the best presentation on the subject I have ever attended in the way it was comprehensive, understandable and very hands-on. I would say that the vast majority who attended the presentation, around 100 people, came out feeling the same way. Su is very knowledeable and she conveys this knowledge and her experience in a great way. Robert Hermans, Senior Vice President, Gunnebo As you’d expect from one of the most effective exponents of social media in the UK, Su is a great speaker at events. She stole the show at our RSAW conference in December 2011 with a dazzling demonstration of the power of online social media. I’d recommend her without hesitation as a speaker and facilitator. Pierre Wassenaar, Past President Royal Society of Architects in Wales “Su was very well received by the delegates at our Annual Conference. We were really pleased with her presentation and the positive feedback and buzz subsequently confirmed that she had given many food for thought. Not only did she provide our event with a thought provoking and informative presentation on social media and its growing importance within the construction sector, but she also shared with our delegation her experiences of working with architects and how her own successes could help us develop our own relationships by embracing this new era of communications. On a personal level, Su was a pleasure to work with, interesting to talk and undoubtedly contributed to the overall success of the event. We very much hope to continue to work with Su on our social development in the future. Charline Adams – Conference organiser Kalzip Ltd, February 2012 Su Butcher is one of those rare individuals who carry their learning, expertise and experience lightly and, who generously shares them all. The generosity makes her a great networker and she uses social media to extend her network and influence in canny and thoughtful ways. The 140 characters in Twitter never seem to limit her ability to communicate and her well-regarded live blogging skills helped spread the word about the Government Construction Summit and many other events. Su is at the crest of the social-media-wave as the leading social strategist in construction. The construction industry is lucky to have her and I cannot recommend her highly enough. I’ve been writing technical and approachable copy for decades, and these days many of my clients use my services to help them communicate clearly and succinctly. We can write Website Copy with an understanding of your users, to motivate conversions; Blog Posts that drive traffic, both topical and evergreen; Case Studies to demonstrate your credibility and educate specifiers; Awards Applications that convert into awards; Reportage on Technical Events, both live blogging and more formal, and Technical Reports that are succinct and readable. Scroll down for examples of all of these. Alternatively, if you want to find out if I can help you, just get in touch now. Why writing for the Web is Different Much of the writing we do is for consumption via a mobile or other screened device, which presents its own challenges. Web readers are impatient, and whilst they may be keen to read longer pieces, those pieces need to be properly structured. When writing for the web, make sure your pieces are: Targeted to a niche audience; Immediately useful to that audience; Optimised for search; Free from jargon and platitudes; Conversational and Interactive; Easily shared with prompts; Brief and well structured with short sentences, short paragraphs, subheadings, bullet points, and Focused on a call to action, making sure your reader knows what to do next. If you’re looking for technical copywriting, support, editing or strategic advice on using good copy, get in touch. Our prices are competitive and tailored to your needs. Examples of Su Butcher’s Copy Writing Website Copywriting I write a lot of copy for websites, but most clients don’t like to share. Talk to me about your requirements if you need other examples. Here is the new SIGA Natural Slate Website where I wrote all of the copy and worked with the client on structure and strategy. I wrote the copy for the AccuRoof website when SIG Design and Technology rebranded, alongside advising on strategy and redesigning the website structure, advising on the user interface and helping the company be assessed by the Code for Construction product Information. I also devised and wrote the 8 Steps to a #PerfectRoof microsite for SIG Design and Technology and all their blog content for over ten years. Blog Post Copywriting Blogging is a type of copywriting which is very different from other forms of writing, such as academic articles (with heavily detailed explanations and full references), news articles (which are for one-way consumption, not interaction) and PR pieces. PR pieces are about the company and its projects. Blog posts are written about the audience, for the audience. One of my clients’ websites attracts many thousands of unique visitors a month and approximately 75% of that traffic arrives via blog posts I have written in the last six years. Some of our blog posts have been associated with hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of material purchases. Here are a few examples of very successful blog posts we have written in recent years. Flat Roof Upstands Best Practice How much with a Zinc Roof Cost? Replacing a Scottish Slate Roof Seven Reasons Why Flat Roofs Leak Does your Favourite Charity need a New Ceiling? Case Study Copywriting Good case studies aren’t just about the project and how great you were working on it; they need to be about the audience and what they can learn from your experiences. In that way, the audience learns something useful and your credibility is enhanced while they do. Here are some examples of case studies JPL has written which fit this mould: Constructing a Copper Clad Ellipse Zinc Shingles on the Amphibious House Zinc Clad Demonstration House in Bedfordshire Lucent W1: How the complex roof was built The right product in the right place Awards Application Copy Writing Writing for awards applications can be quite tricky. Whilst you need to have awareness of the subject, you also need editing experience to ensure you keep to the word limits whilst putting over your case in the most effective way. As well as writing (and winning) awards for my own company, I have also written awards applications for British Land. Of the five awards applications for British Land we made between 2012 and 2014, four were shortlisted (80%) and two won their award (40%). The awards entered were all related to sustainable development topics and included The London Planning Awards (RTPI and Mayor of London) The Green Business Awards (supported by ENDS) and The Building Awards (UBM). Reportage on Technical Events The Knowledge Transfer Network (part of Innovate UK) commissioned us to write Interim Projects Reviews on two of their collaborative R&D competitions: Digitising the Construction Sector, a £6m funding competition to support the digitisation of the construction sector supply chain, and Rethinking the Build Process, a £4m competition to encourage a radical rethink of the build process and supply chain relationships, leading to more consistent delivery of low-impact buildings. This commission involved attending the review workshops and curating the presentations from a day into a short document with key information and commentary. The project reviews were produced to focus the mind of the participants, share the results of the work thus far and make it possible for people to get in touch if they wanted more information or to collaborate. These competitions kickstarted some of construction’s most interesting recent innovations such as Integrated Project Insurance (Dudley Advance II), Bid4Free: the cloud-based platform to support subcontractor tendering, and the Digital Object Identifiers project led by the RIBA, BSi and Construction Products Association. Live Blogging of Construction Events I’ve been live blogging events for eight years, evolving a technique and tools which allow the maximum return on investment for organisers in terms of visibility, interaction and web traffic. You can find out more about this service here. Technical Reports, Guides and Toolkits A Fresh Way Forward for Product Data: State of the Nation In 2018 I was commissioned by the UK BIM Alliance to run the Working Group on Product Data. This group of 12 people interviewed over 140 professionals and drew together a concise report on the current ‘state of the nation’ on product data. The whole process took just over six months from inception to publication. As chair of the group I ran the consultation and writing process in a collaborative manner, co-ordinating the team and working with them to meet our various deadlines. You can read the report here and read a summary of the outcomes here. BIM for Housing Associations Toolkit In 2018 I was approached by Jack Ostrofsky to help set up a community of housing associations, asset managers and their consultants to produce a Toolkit to enable housing assocations to implement BIM in the wake of the Grenfell Tragedy and the forthcoming Building Safety Act. The Toolkit was first produced in June 2021 and an updated version in the Summer of 2022. It is supported by the National Housing Federation and funded by six major housing associations. I became programme manager for the group (known as BIM4HAs) and run its communications, writing the majority of its content and supporting others to produce useful resources for housing associations. You can find out more about the BIM4HAs Toolkit on the NHF website. A brochure launching the project was also produced – view it here. Digitisation for construction product manufacturers – a plain language guide Following on from the ‘State of the Nation’ report, the Institution of Engineering and Technology commissioned me to write a Plain Language Guide specifically aimed at Construction Product Manufacturers to help them digitise. As part of the process of writing the guide, the editorial team (myself, Rick Hartwig of the IET, Patricia Massey of Electrium and Paul Surin of IBM) collaborated on a series of articles (which I wrote) and held a series of open zoom calls to discuss them. The guide was published in 2021 and has been very well received by the construction community. You can read the Plain Language Guide here. The link also leads to a video of the launch webinar (which I hosted for IET) and videos about the guide (in which I featured). There is also a summary document and a key facts flyer available. The team has a profile on the IET’s EngX (blog) website here where all the articles and videos of the calls are available to view. The Apollo Protocol: unifying digital twins across sectors In the autumn of 2021 I was approached to assist in producing a white paper setting out the case for a cross sector communication process between providers of digital twins in the built environment and manufacturing. This evolved into The Apollo Protocol and the cross sector Apollo Forum for the Built Environment and Manufacturing. The white paper was developed over 18 months as the cross sector group learned from each other and formulated their proposal. The document was written as a collaborative exercise which I facilitated and was launched at the IET in September 2022. The project is supported by Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), The University of Sheffield Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), High-Value Manufacturing (HVM) Catapult, The Digital Twin Hub (supported by the Connected Places Catapult), techUK, The Alan Turing Institute, and now InnovateUK. You can read the White Paper here. Following the successful launch in 2022, Innovate UK funded the team as part of their Cyber Physical Infrastructure funding to run eight events. Four in person and four online events took place around the country and were devised by the team on which I serve. I am carrying out reportage on the events, am working with the stakeholder comms teams to promote them and shall be writing the report about this experimental project, which now has a home on the Digital Twin Hub here. Book a Call Learn Start here Learn about Strategy Learn about Linkedin for Construction Learn about Blogging Selling to Architects Live Blogging of Events Contact Contact Us Book a Call Learn about Blogging in Construction Blogging is a key part of many a social media strategy, but the word ‘Blog’ is so frequently misused in construction. What a Blog is not A Blog is not your PR Pieces – you may have a news or press section on your website, but this is not a blog. A blog is not about you, its about your audience. A Blog is not a series of News Articles – equally whilst journalism produces news articles for mass consumption, a blog is not this either. We are producing for engagement (remember about ‘the conversation’?) A Blog is not Academic Articles – or other learned writing. Writing for the web is different, and requires different skills. Blog posts don’t have to be comprehensive either. What is a Blog? A blog is an online journal, usually written by a person or team of people, targeted at a key audience, designed to engage them. It contains regular, periodic entries known as posts. A blog demonstrates your credibility and expertise in a particular niche topic. Because blog posts are published online, using a blogging platform developed for the purpose, people can receive your blog in various different ways, and it has to be produced with them in mind. An ecosystem within the internet ‘scrapes’ and shares your blog across the web. Each blog post is a Social Object, and it’s a great place to publish social objects too. Come to my Strategy Workshop to learn about social objects and why they are so important. Why Construction should use Blogging You’ll be familiar with blogs, though you might not know what they are or be able to recognize them. If you look forward to reading what someone writes about a topic, be it fishing or soldering, and you enjoy reading the comments of others on the pages below, and perhaps contributing yourself, you are looking forward to a blogger’s next post. Brian Green has written an economics blog (coolly called ‘Brickonomics’) for many years. It is now hosted by Building Magazine, but demonstrates many of the characteristics of a classic blog. Blogging is a key part of a social media strategy because it makes people want to come back and see what you have to say. As an industry full of various grades of nuanced expertise, blogging has huge potential to help the right prospects find you online. Business Benefits of Blogging Blogging can help you: Demonstrate the credibility of you and your organisation Humanise your website and corporate brand Create and demonstrate thought leadership Introduce clients to other aspects of your work Hosted within a website, it brings fresh content (and improved Search Engine Optimisation, helping you be found and increasing return traffic) Get you more visitors, inbound links and pageviews (). Put Blogging to Work Why do we need to teach our staff to blog properly? Even if you have confident content creators in your team, they may not be the right people to blog. Like other social media platforms, you need the right people to be doing the right things. If your bloggers are the right people, they may not be able to sustain a good blog if they don’t know what is important and what should be discarded. Blogging is an acquired skill that needs to be learned and honed over time. It isn’t a quick fix. Whilst you can have some easy quick results, real return on investment comes of a prolonged period, which means you need to support your bloggers to not only learn the right skills but be able to develop consistency and find their voice. A good blogger needs to learn how to pace themselves and plug blogging into their work routine. In house training for your team is available by appointment – please get in touch with your requirements. If you’re not sure whether blogging should be part of your Social Media Strategy, or you don’t know if you have the right bloggers in mind, read more about how to develop a strategy here. LinkedIn is the largest network of professional individuals in much of the western world and increasingly in the developing world as well. In the last few years LinkedIn has changed from purely a site for jobseekers into the most popular professional business platform in the UK. Why Construction should use LinkedIn Most of my construction clients who carry out a strategy exercise find that their customers, advocates, and even their competitors are on LinkedIn, along with most of their employees, but that they have no strategy to either use it for business benefits, or help their employees avoid public embarrassment. In late 2013 I researched the UK construction membership of LinkedIn and identified over 500,000 construction professionals using LinkedIn, working for over 13,000 companies [Update: in March 2016 there were over 1 million construction professionals working for over 20k companies]. They are part of a group of 12-14 million UK LinkedIn users, many of whom access the platform at least once a week. [Update now over 20 million UK LinkedIn users]. It’s no surprise that LinkedIn is popular with construction professionals, because it is built on the principles that we apply in our businesses: A culture of referral; The importance of maintaining relationships between individuals, and Trust built on regular professional contact. LinkedIn is like a telephone directory for the Internet generation, but it’s so much more. If you connect to people you know on LinkedIn, the platform adds value to every person, by making your network visible, showing you who they know, and helping you sustain and develop business relationships efficiently. Search for people on LinkedIn, and you can see who you know, knows them. So LinkedIn is a tool for your real life network, and not just for you, but also for your clients and their contacts. Join LinkedIn and help your clients recommend you to their peers. Business Benefits of Linkedin for Construction Linkedin can help you: Research customers and prospects Demonstrate your professional expertise Drive targeted, high quality traffic to your website Obtain introductions from happy clients Initiate and nurture relationships with prospects Put Linkedin to Work Why do we need to teach our staff to use Linkedin properly? On one hand, its ecosystem is a powerful tool for research, lead generation and nurturing, and using it properly can give you competitive advantage. On the other hand, if you pile in and make some of the common mistakes (like inviting people you don’t know to connect) you could have your account suspended and damage your employer’s reputation. I recommend that you learn the advantages and risks of Linkedin. Your client-facing staff should have training to enable them to use LinkedIn as a tool in their work, and that other staff learn how it works, what to do and equally important, what not to do. In house training for your team is available by appointment – please get in touch with your requirements. If you’re not sure whether Linkedin should be part of your Social Media Strategy, read more about how to develop a strategy here. It is a particularly popular tool for construction professionals in that it builds on their preferred method of obtaining advice and services; the referral network. To be effective therefore, social media marketing within construction should: Leverage the authority of existing advocates for the organisation and its products or services, helping them to recommend you; Enable simple direct contact with technical expertise and information; Make the same human-faced quality of service online as offline; Create and encourage sharing of useful materials, thereby encouraging online advocacy. A successful social media strategy will include: An Internal Audit to establish existing presence and skills within the company, and an External Audit of key competitors, targets(clients, consultants and contractors) and existing advocates to inform the strategy process. Strategic Integration within the brand’s overall marketing strategy, identification of objectives and measurable goals. Identifiable branded Company Homes – a social media enabled website, company Linkedin page, blog to be useful and encourage engagment, and branded Twitter profiles, for example. Social Objects – useful, shareable, topical resources, tools and guides to assist in making the case for using services, e.g. blog posts, downloads, E-Newsletters A workable social media Policy and its adoption across the organisation; Personal profiles for key individual participants within the organisation who are target-facing (e.g. internal Technical support, External Reps/BDM and CPD delivery, marketing support personnel) to enable them to become key contacts within the organisation and where appropriate, liaise directly with advocates and enquirers, for example responding to queries about blog posts. Training for key internal participants in Linkedin and twitter where appropriate, plus blogging training and/or ghostwriting where appropriate. An ongoing process of Hunting and Farming – developing, delivering and promoting resources and engaging online. This process to be carried out by all parts of the team including marketing support, individuals within the firm, engaging with external advocates and prospects. Measurement and Review including traffic reports, results including goal conversion and quarterly reviews of strategy and implementation. How to make it happen I help all construction organisations, large and small, maximise the use of internet tools to create better performance and profit. A Construction Professional’s perspective on your objectives Extensive connections within the UK Construction and Architectural community A strong, credible Social Media evangelist to look differently at your campaigns Clear commitment to the meaningful measurement of results Deliver tangible Value benefits on your activities. “My approach as a consultant is to identify where you need external assistance to produce results, and where you have the skills and potential to deliver in house. I then help you get systems in place that will bring the best long-term results.” Su Butcher If you’d like to know how Just Practising can help you leverage social media to achieve your business objectives, then get in touch or request a call back. Su trained as an architect and managed three successful architects’ practices during the ‘90s and noughties. She also managed the first-year design studio at the University of Liverpool School of Architecture from 1992-95 whilst taking a PhD in Architectural Education. Su is well known as a promoter of collaborative working and better communication. She has been networking online since 2004 and is an early and prolific user of social and digital media. Su was one of the first 1 million LinkedIn users, and began blogging and tweeting in 2008. Su’s consultancy offers strategic help to construction product companies who want to communicate better with architects, particularly using digital tools. She also provides coaching for companies wishing to enter the UK construction market, she advises contractors, consultants and professional associations, and she writes, trains and speaks about technical construction topics, information and knowledge management and social and digital media in construction. Find out more about Su’s consulting services. In 2015, Su produced a series of videos with The B1M about BIM and Social Media, including a hugely popular one about collaborative working in construction. She served on the promotions team at BIM4M2, was the first vice chair of Women in BIM, and spent two years as a non-executive on the UK BIM Alliance board. In 2018 she chaired the cross-industry working group that produced the seminal report ‘A Fresh Way Forward for Product Data: State of the Nation’. More recently her digital work has led to project managing the IET’s Built Environment Panel Plain Language Guide Editorial Board who are building on the awareness of product data through other publications including “Digitising for construction product manufacturers: a plain language guide“. You can read the articles associated with this work on the IET’s blog IET Eng-X here (email registration required). The editorial board is now the Plain Language Group and you can find out about them here and view their publications here. Su has also been involved in assisting clients to access information from the construction process, notably with BIM for Housing Associations, a not for profit owned and run by housing associations, which aims to make asset and development information management better for the housing sector. Su was a founding member and became the programme manager, supporting volunteer participants from numerous housing providers and their consultants. In 2021 the group published the BIM4HAs Toolkit which interprets BIM language, standards and documentation for housing associations to use more easily. Su also managed the group’s communications. You can read a recent interview with Su Butcher here. and listen to Jason Boyle interview her about her perspectives on the profession of architecture here. Why ‘Just Practising’? When Su began blogging about why architects find it so difficult to be profitable, Paul Wilkinson suggested she call the blog ‘Just Practising’. The name stuck and became the name of her communications consultancy in 2011. “Given the taste for social media “gurus” at the time, it made perfect sense,” she says. “After all, aren’t we all just practising? No one has a monopoly on expertise. We are all learning, and we can all learn from each other.” Practising is a verb, whilst Practice is a noun, as eloquently put by @IrishMike15: C the noun and sing the verb 🎵 — IrishMike (@IrishMike15) June 27, 2020 Contact Su to talk about what you need or read about her consultancy services here. .libutton {
display: flex;
flex-direction: column;
justify-content: center;
padding: 7px;
text-align: center;
outline: none;
text-decoration: none !important;
color: #ffffff !important;
width: 200px;
height: 32px;
border-radius: 16px;
background-color: #0A66C2;
font-family: "SF Pro Text", Helvetica, sans-serif;
}
Follow on LinkedIn Follow @SuButcher on Twitter Primary SidebarSearch this website Follow Recently on the Blog Digital Product Passports and ConcreteFixing the Black Elephant in the roomDigital Construction Power PlayerWhat information management really means: Nine principlesInformation management for insurers – The problem of disclosure in the supply chainDecoding Data Standardisation and the Golden Thread Blog Posts Architects (56) Best Practice Examples (8) BIM (48) Can you Help? We do this by Engaging with industry about their concerns and level of understanding. Researching industry views to facilitate a better understanding of the challenge. Publishing independent plain language articles, guides and information. Sharing our knowledge and that of our peers with the industry online and in person. Supporting manufacturers, construction professionals and policymakers to understand the challenge of digitisation and make informed decisions to enable for a digitised construction supply chain. Who is the PLG? The Plain Language Group at at UK Construction Week in October 2021 The group emerged from a working group of the UK BIM Alliance in 2018 and was also part of the Built Environment Expert Panel of The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). The group is: Rick Hartwig, former Built Environment Lead, IET.
