Reach us by train If you are travelling by train, Broxbourne Station is 3 miles south of our office or Rye House Station is just a 2 minutes walk. Gertrude is a university student in Zambia whom we sponsor via the charity, African Impact Foundation. Gertrude recently contacted us via the charity, sharing an overview of her studies with us. The whole HB team is so inspired by her dedication, her commitment and her passion to support her family and home village. Gertrude is currently in her second year of her Bachelor’s degree in Finance and Banking, and she continues to grow into a confident, capable young woman with a bright future ahead. From tackling challenging coursework to embracing life as a university student, she’s showing resilience, focus, and a wonderful sense of humour along the way. Some of the our team including our Chartered Accountant Apprentice, Abbie met with Gertrude over video link. Gertrude talked to the team about her studies. We heard first hand about her work and got a little insight into her university life. Challenging yourself and pushing yourself ever higher Whilst we’re supporting Gertrude and her studies financially, it’s interesting to reflect on how she’s teaching us too. Yes, we’re understanding more about life in Zambia and the challenges faced, particularly by young women. But there’s more than that. Gertrude is encouraging us to think about how many opportunities we have here in the UK, and question whether we’re making the right choices and fulfilling our own potential. As Gertrude moves through the university, she tells us that she’s finding the work “a bit more tough and a bit more involving” and shares that it’s exam time and there’s a lot of work to do. As well as accountancy exams, Gertrude has joined a course to learn about being an Empowered Leader. We’re taken by her keen interest to expand her knowledge and develop as a leader. This is something that we instil in all our apprentices. Accountancy knowledge is important but so is office etiquette, communication skills, and resilience, and in time, how to share your knowledge with others and how to build an effective team. There’s also life lessons to be learned – how to make a commitment and stick to it and how to be a proactive member of your work family, as well as your local community. Will you help a young person in Zambia? Education is not free in Zambia – even the younger children have to pay to go to school. Many of Gertrude’s friends are hoping that they can be sponsored through university too so if this is of interest, please consider talking to our Director, Keith Grover, or the African Impact Foundation who can find students who would benefit from the help. “Your support means the world to her. As well as giving careers advice to local young people we help them by taking on apprentices. Charity Our team is enthusiastic about supporting good causes. Teens Unite Fighting Cancer, based in Broxbourne, is our main charity currently. They bring together young people who have a cancer diagnosis through free activities and short breaks. We organise and take part in many events to raise awareness and funds. As well as a SkyDive, a team of HB runners join the Teens Unite Fighting Cancer 10k and Hoddesdon Give Your Town The Run Around races to raise funds for charity and to beat our Personal Bests! Typically, our team raises around £5,000 in a year for local Hertfordshire good causes.
