Registering as self-employed is straightforward and covers both income tax and National Insurance contributions. If you haven’t registered as self-employed before, you need to register online by creating an HMRC online account. Once you’ve received your user ID and set your password, you simply log back into the account and select ‘Add a tax’ and then ‘Self assessment’. HMRC will then lead you through a series of questions and confirm your identity before issuing your UTR (unique tax reference) by post. From then on, you’ll need to complete your yearly self-assessment tax return for HMRC. We would advise you get an accountant from day one, to ensure your return is complete and includes all available allowances.
