Despite being super fit, back problems threatened to derail strong man hopeful Richard Ellis’ dreams of competing. Last year the 30-year-old from Westcliff was persuaded by his friends to enter the Strong Man competition. However, a few weeks prior to the competition, disaster struck, which is when Richard decided to to seek help. Having asked around and heard positive reviews he came to see Paz at Cliffs. An article about Richard’s experience and how Paz helped him achieve a personal goal of competing in the Strong Man competition appeared recently in The Echo and The Gazette which you can read here. Since achieving his goal of competing in a Strong Man competition, Richard has turned his attention to jiu jitsu, a martial art and combat sport system. He has also set up an IT business, Relltek, with his brother. We wish him and his brother all the best with their new venture. There’s no stopping Richard! Posted in Patient Stories about Cliffs Chiropractor SouthendTagged back, chiropractic, cliffs chiropractic southend, Mexican Wave Helping Heroes – Aaron’s Story Posted on 27th February 20182nd March 2020 Aaron Hicks was serving in Afghanistan when he suffered life changing injuries by an improvised explosive device (IED) nearly eight years ago. He got thrown from his vehicle and fractured his spine and L1 and his hip. His driver and his commander died in the explosion. Aaron considers himself very fortunate and lucky to have survived. He was flown out of Afghanistan to Birmingham for surgery where he had his left hip fused and he had a spinal fusion to the L1 above and below. However, even after extensive surgery, Aaron still suffered significant pain. Aaron has been able to seek help at Cliffs with funding received from Help for Heroes for which he is extremely grateful. It’s been about four weeks since Aaron started treatment at Cliffs and he says himself that he can already see a massive difference in those few weeks. It’s a real privilege for us to take care of Aaron and we thank him for coming along to Cliffs and also for sharing his story with us. Arif also shares his top tips to cope with bedwetting. Arif’s Top Tips To Cope With Bedwetting There’s no hard and fast solution to bedwetting, and if chiropractic treatment is not the answer, these tips might help your child and you: Reassure your child. It’s important for them to know they haven’t done anything wrong, and it will get better. Don’t tell them off for wetting the bed, this won’t help and could make matters worse. There’s usually no obvious reason why children wet the bed, but it could be because they produce more urine than the bladder can cope with; have an overactive bladder (where the bladder can only hold a small amount of urine); are deep sleepers, so they don’t react to the signals telling their brain the bladder is full or there’s a family history. Sometimes bedwetting is stress related – if there’s a change in family structure, you’ve moved home or your child is being bullied – try to work on is anxiety before you start a new regime. Bedwetting isn’t something your child can control, so rewards shouldn’t be based on whether they wet the bed or not. You may want to give rewards for things like having plenty of drinks during the day or remembering to have a wee before bed. If your reward scheme isn’t working after about a week, try something else. Make sure your child has easy access to the toilet at night, leave a light on in the bathroom and put a child’s seat on the toilet. Use waterproof covers on your child’s mattress and duvet. A bedwetting alarm is useful once a few dry nights have been achieved. This helps to create awareness at just the right time and trigger a trip to the toilet. But with help from Paz, Richard got in touch to share his outstanding performance with us at the competition! Richard wrote to us saying: “I wanted to thank you for all your help. I first came to see Paz as I couldn’t breathe properly as my ribs and spine weren’t agreeing with one another. Geoffrey is a a renowned classical guitarist although he is far too humble to describe himself as such. He has been teaching and performing since the late 70s. He came as a patient to Cliffs looking for help as he suffered from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and had been in pain since the early 90s. Geoffrey has also undergone back surgery. Ten years ago, the 65-year old, started feeling pain in his knees when he was walking around the estate; X-rays revealed he would need a knee-replacement within the next three years. He did nothing for a couple of years, then he visited Arif at Cliffs Chiropractic Clinic, for a consultation. Ray had led a physical life which over time reduced the cartilage lining the bony surfaces of his knees.This is known as degeneration or osteoarthritis. The roughening of the moving surfaces creates friction and inflammation, resulting in joint stiffness and, often, pain in the surrounding muscles and ligaments. Physically examining and x-raying Ray’s knees confirmed the diagnosis. The treatment would involve chiropractic to adjust and improve the movement, acupuncture to reduce the acute inflammation and supplements and nutrients to improve the cartilage and reduce the chronic inflammation that occurs in conditions like osteoarthritis. Even though Ray’s osteoarthritis is advanced the treatment has delayed the need for a replacement by several years and he can continue working as normal. Ray says, “I’ve had eight years of monthly acupuncture, and take daily glucosamine with chondroitin and MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) supplements, which help my flexibility. “Of course, I have my good days and my bad days but I’ve been able to work on the estate unhindered by pain since I started my treatment.
